The Hindu solar
calendar consists of 12 months, each month beginning with the entry (sakranti)
of the sun into one of the zodiacal signs. Each month is 1/12 of the
year long. The day begins at sunrise. Each month begins on the day of
the 1st sunrise after the calculated time of the new month but if that
time is after sunrise, then the next day is the 1st of the new month.
Time of sunrise may be calculated according to rules or ephemerides
may be used. The consequence of this process is that a month can have
any number of days from 29 to 32 and the beginning of any particular
month can only be known if we first compute the position of the sun.
There are many variations in detail to this calendar, the result of
which is a degree of uncertainty as to when any particular event will
occur, plus or minus one day.
