Web Days

November 09, 2000
Did you know that August 15 is Mother's Day in Costa Rica? Neither did I, until I found myself outside the locked doors of the National Museum in San Jose one August 15, reading a sign that said the place was closed for Mother's Day.
This inconvenient misunderstanding - as with most of this world's inconvenient misunderstandings - could have been prevented by the Web. Had I consulted The Earth Calendar before leaving for Central America, I would have known not to plan to visit a public institution on August 15 in Costa Rica.
The Earth Calendar displays holidays around the world by date, by country and by religion. So you can call up a page showing you all the holidays around the world on August 15, or all the holidays in Costa Rica for a year or all the Islamic holidays for a year. <>
Playing around with calendar sites can be useful and informative. It can also be pointless and fun.

Earth Calendar 2000

On this site, every day is a holiday! The Earth Calendar is a book of holidays and celebrations around the world. Listings cover any day that recognizes a cultural event. Find out what people are celebrating or skipping work for today. This year's calendar will help you plan, and 2001 holiday dates are due to available within the next couple of months.

...I'm speaking about Earth Calendar a site where you can search for all the public holidays of the world. You can search by religion or country, or see what's being celebrated where on a specific date. So what are we celebrating today (Friday)? Afghanistan's independence day. (Maybe you can buy your Afghan dog a bone, if you can't think of anything more celebratory to do.) But can you believe our luck? Tomorrow is Chihsi (Lover's Day) in Taiwan!

Are you the one who needs a reason to celebrate? Let's make life easy for you. Visit the site everyday and you'll find that you could be spending the next Monday (the first working day of the week) as National Picnic Day in Iran.

Strange days
Today is National Heroes Day in the Cape Verde Islands and Guinea Bissau, Foundation Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Inauguration Day in the USA. Those are not things you'll find in the average pocket diary, but Earth Calendar provides a day-by-day guide that will entertain trivia buffs and might even help tourists and business travelers.
